The 2004 Walkers Rally in Eureka Springs Arkansas was a delightful mixture of town and country walks
Everyone enjoyed the four mile walk from the West Mountain, down into the "holler" and up the east mountain to a lookout of our hotel. Music, water and treats made for a nice break at the gazebo before heading down the mountain again and into town for a final stop at the history museum.
Along the way, residents and costumed guides came out to inform us on the unique history of the town, which has over 60 springs that were thought to contain healing powers. At the Rosalie house, many stopped to don victorian hats and have their pictures taken on the porch.
A rendition of Amazing Grace at the Thornecrown Chapel, one of the most stunning architectual achievements of this century, made of glass and steel, was awe inspiring. And the Blue Heritage Spring and Gardens was a perfect, lazy walk for a warm day.
On Wednesday we headed out to the deeper valleys of the Ozarks and walked the Lost Valley Trail, scrambling up into cavernous overhangs. No one will forget the two horses who seemed to be begging us to come and play, whinnying and gamboling from fence post to fence post.
We had a great talk with Dr James Fain, who spoke about the healing power of herbs. Dr. Fain has a PHD in Nuclear Medicine, but when he became ill, he began researching medical literature on the power of herbs to heal himself. Now he owns an herbacy in Eureka Springs an helps people around the world. He recently appeared on National Public Radio.
The Blue Grass Band on our farewell night was a hit -- real local flavor. And I got to check something off my list of "to do's." I got to play with a band! (I took over the washboard for a couple of songs. All I needed to do was keep the beat.)
Those are just a few of the highlights of our Eureka Springs Adventure.
The 2005 Walkers Rally will be in Salem, Massachusetts, once the most cosmpolitan city in the New World and the shipping center of America. Often over shadowed by the Salem witch trials, the history of this seafaring city is rich and diverse. While visiting this fall, I felt like I was staying in a northern version of Charleston. So much to do and see, beautiful homes, and a great historic hotel right in the center of town. Come with us in 2005! Go to the Walkers Rally Page
